New videos from Japanese YouTuber Man of Watch demonstrate how the LED backlights for the LCD displays on the new G-Shock Black and Bold Red (BBR) Series appear when activated. They are standard backlights that illuminate the background and have a red color due to the red tint of the LCD display. This red backlight may be preferable to the usual white backlight which some people may find a bit harsh on the eyes in dark settings, and may be better for maintaining night vision, but there is still a bit of white light bleeding through the edges in certain areas depending on the model. (The GA-700BBR-1A does not have an LCD backlight, only a single light for the dial.) In a normal (lighted) environment, the displays appear to be on the rather dark side compared to non-tinted or lightly tinted models, but the contrast of the black digits seems adequate. We suggest considering the GD-010BBR-1 with larger digits if legibility is a concern. The dark red tint of the BBR Series may actually be more of a benefit for night use, although it certainly looks cool and unique in the daylight.
The BBR Series was released in May in Japan and Asia. The DW-5600BBR-1ER was released in the U.K., and all five models are listed for Europe. We will hopefully know in June which models are coming to the U.S.
