Recent photos from U.S. Navy SEAL training exercises show that SEALs are still wearing G-Shock watches for diving activities in 2025. While Navy SEALs have long been associated with the G-Shock DW-6600 and subsequently the DW-6900, they have also been spotted wearing the DW-9052, which was known to be issued to SEAL divers in the 2010s. Judging by these photos, that may still be the case today, and there are other recent photos of SEALs using the DW-6900 and DW-9052.
The DW-9052 has the same functions as the DW-6900 and a similar structure with a front-facing light button. There is no recently updated module for the DW-9052, so it is only available with the blue-green EL backlight, unlike recent DW-6900 models with module 3529 and the more power-efficient LED backlight.
Although Casio officially recommends only snorkeling and not scuba diving with its watches rated for 200-meter water resistance, with the G-Shock Frogman being Casio’s sole line of ISO “Diver’s 200M” watches for scuba diving, G-Shock watches are known to be quite underrated when it comes to their water resistance, and Navy SEALs and other military units around the world have continually used them for scuba diving. Casio states not to press any watch buttons underwater (with the exception of Frogman models), but there is anecdotal evidence that SEALs use the light button underwater, which is probably why G-Shock watches with a large front light button are preferred by military divers over the DW-5600, as they are often wearing gloves when diving. Like the side buttons on a G-Shock, the front light button also uses two o-ring seals and it’s probably somewhat safe to use it underwater up to a certain depth (at your own risk), but we should reiterate Casio’s official stance of not pressing buttons underwater and also mention that although it may not lead to immediate malfunction, it could be detrimental to the effective lifespan of the button’s o-rings.
