What we know about the G-Shock Mudman GW-9500

UPDATE: Casio officially announced the GW-9500. See G-Shock Mudman GW-9500 has a Pro Trek-style duplex LCD display, Triple Sensor, Solar-Radio Timekeeping.

What we know about the upcoming G-Shock Mudman GW-9500

It appears that G-Shock will be releasing an all-new Mudman series before a new Rangeman series, as leaks of the Mudman GW-9500 have been making the rounds online as of late. Here is what we know about it so far.

Based on the name (with “GW”), this Mudman will have Tough Solar power and Multi-Band 6 automatic radio time adjustment. As a Mudman, it is resistant to mud and dust.

The watch greatly resembles the Pro Trek PRW-3400 from 2022, and it very likely has the same functions. The PRW-3400 does not have the shock resistance level of a G-Shock and is water-resistant to 100 meters, whereas the GW-9500 is water-resistant to 200 meters. Unlike the PRW-3400, the GW-9500 does not have a rotary bezel. The PRW-3400 has sunrise and sunset time display like the Rangeman GW-9400. It’s not confirmed if the GW-9500 has it, but it probably will. (The Pro Trek PRW-3400 was not released in the U.S. or Europe.)

Unlike the previous Mudman GW-9300 and G-9300 series which only had a Twin Sensor (compass and thermometer), the GW-9500 is expected to have a Triple Sensor with pressure sensor (altimeter and barometer), compass, and thermometer.

Leaked images indicate that the GW-9500 will have a duplex (two-layer) display like the PRW-3400. The secondary display layer features pointers and is primarily used for the compass along with some other functions. It’s not known if the LCD display is an STN LCD or what type of glass is used.

The following image shows the duplex display in use with the compass function on a Pro Trek PRW-3400.

A leaked memo indicates that the price of the watch will be £349 in the U.K., which means it should be around $400 in the U.S. (For comparison, the GST-B400BB-1A is £349 in the U.K. and $400 in the U.S.) A photo of in-hand products indicates that the GW-9500 will be available in black (with positive LCD display), black and orange (with inverted LCD display), and black and olive green (with inverted LCD display). The launch date is not known, although the timing of the leaks suggests that it could be within the next few months.

Our Take:

The GW-9500 should appeal to outdoorspeople who prefer the larger digits and functionality of the duplex display found on some Pro Trek models but in an ultra-rugged G-Shock housing. While some previous analog-digital G-Shock series were inspired by Pro Trek displays, this is the first full digital G-Shock that adopts the Pro Trek digital display style.

It’s interesting that G-Shock decided to label this a Mudman and not a Rangeman. Based on its features, it could have easily been called a Rangeman. The series number (9500) indicates that this model surpasses the Rangeman GW-9400 in the Master of G hierarchy. We now believe that it is unlikely that the Rangeman GW-9400 will be upgraded anytime soon, and we’re hoping that it remains active for the time being. This also seems to suggest that if a new Rangeman is coming, it will be of the more advanced “GPR” variety like the discontinued GPR-B1000 with an MIP LCD display and GPS.
