G-Shock G-8900 from 2010s is back with the G-8900S-1

G-Shock G-8900S-1

The G-Shock G-8900-1 is an unexpected new release that takes us back to the 2010s. Although there were quite a few models released for the G-8900 and its variants starting in 2011, the last G-8900 model came in 2020 with the black and gold G-8900GB-1. The G-8900 was previously inactive in Japan until now, but the GW-8900-1JF and the GW-8900A-1JF with Tough Solar and Multi-Band 6 are still active there. In the U.S., the black G8900-1 with an aluminum bezel is still active.

The G-8900S-1 is a largish and manly style of digital watch with a front light button. It looks like the type of model that could have launched the series, as it has the traditional G-Shock brand colors of black and red, along with a stainless steel bezel piece. Some of the distinguishing characteristics of the G-8900 include world time with multi-time (4 city settings), 1/100-second stopwatch (up to 23:59’59.99”), 24-hour countdown timer (settable in hours, minutes, and seconds), flash alert (optional setting for flashing LED backlight for alarms, end of countdown timer, and hourly time signal), 5 one-time or daily alarms, and auto LED backlight with a 1.5 or 3-second duration. The watch measures 55.1 x 52.5 x 16.3 millimeters and weighs 69 grams.

Perhaps the G-8900’s biggest weakness is the approximate 3-year battery life (on a CR2016 battery), but that is assuming you use the flash alert with an alarm and the LED backlight once a day.

The G-8900S-1JF is an August release in Japan with a tax-included price of 14,850 yen.

Update: G-Shock U.S. is expected to release the G8900S-1 for $120.
