Casio released the all-new Pro Trek PRW-B1000 series in Japan and Asia this month. Although it was not announced in the U.S., Amazon.com is currently selling the PRW-B1000-1 there for $536.10. [Casio America released the PRWB1000-1 for $640, and it is now $521.99 [about 18% off] at Amazon, links below.] The PRW-B1000-1 is a deluxe Pro Trek model that shares the same functions as the G-Shock Mudmaster GWG-B1000 but has 100-meter water resistance instead of 200-meter and lacks G-Shock’s shock-resistant specification. Some of the deluxe features include a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, a flame-retardant case made of bio-based resin, and a Duro Soft band made with CNF-reinforced rubber. CNF (cellulose nanofiber) is a bio-based material made from wood-derived fibers that offers greater durability than silicone, low and high temperature resistance, and resistance against hydrolysis or cracking. This climbing-oriented model also has a low-temperature specification (-10℃/14℉). The PRW-B1000 is more compact and lighter than the GWG-B1000 and just slightly larger than the previous Pro Trek PRW-6900, measuring 50.8 x 45.8 x 14.9 millimeters and weighing 79 grams.
The square ion-plated stainless steel bezel draws inspiration from Yosemite’s legendary El Capitan, while the inset dial’s 9 o’clock indicator hand pays tribute to the classic piton, an emblem of climbing gear innovation in the 1970s.
The watch also has advanced functions including Tough Solar power, Multi-Band 6 auto radio time adjustment, Bluetooth smartphone link, the Triple Sensor (pressure with altimeter and barometer, compass, and thermometer), and sunrise and sunset time. Using the Bluetooth connection with the Casio Watches smartphone app offers additional functions such as auto time adjustment, approximately 300 world time cities, time and place log, location memory, location indicator, route log, mode/display order customization, auto altitude correction, and phone finder. The location memory allows the current location to be saved, and the location indicator displays the direction and distance to the saved location on the watch. It is also possible to set any other location for the location memory and indicator with the phone app (except in China). The route log uses the phone’s GPS to record waypoints and altitude readings on the app.
With its more durable components, expanded navigation and tracking functions, plus other Bluetooth enhancements, the PRW-B1000 is a worthy upgrade to the similarly-styled PRW-6900, as well as a more affordable alternative to the G-Shock GWG-B1000. It is the first Pro Trek series that combines Tough Solar which fully powers the watch, Bluetooth, and the Triple Sensor.
Casio also released the PRW-B1000-5 (casio.com) with a brown band and gold indices in Asia.
