Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra wears G-Shock GA-100 watch in NBA Eastern Conference Semifinals win

On May 12, the Miami Heat beat the the New York Knicks in six games to advance to the NBA Eastern Conference Finals and face the Boston Celtics on May 17. Head coach Erik Spoelstra wore a G-Shock GA-100 during the occasion, a watch that he’s been wearing regularly for the past few years. While the two-time champion head coach is certainly at the stage of his career where he can afford any watch he wants, there must be something about the $110 GA-100-1A1 that he really likes, perhaps it’s the lightweight comfort and durable nature of the watch. Spoelstra has also adopted a more casual coaching wardrobe lately, forgoing the traditional suit for more comfortable polo shirts and athletic wear during games.

Spoelstra’s personal history is quite inspirational, as he began his basketball career from humble beginnings and worked his way up to the pinnacle of coaching. He played as a point guard in high school before playing for the University of Portland and two years professionally in Germany where he served as player-assistant coach. In 1995, he was hired by the Miami Heat as a video coordinator and was eventually promoted to assistant coach by head coach Pat Riley, who became his mentor. The Miami Heat won the championship in the 2006 NBA Finals against the Dallas Mavericks, and Riley picked Spoelstra to be his successor in 2008. Spoelstra, who is half Filipino, was the first ever Asian-American NBA head coach and the first Asian-American head coach in the four major North American sports leagues (MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL). In 2012, he became the first Asian-American NBA head coach to win an NBA championship when the Heat defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder. In 2013, the Heat would win back-to-back titles after defeating the San Antonio Spurs. While Spoelstra is sometimes described as the NBA’s most underrated coach, serious basketball fans acknowledge him as one of the best of all time.

The GA-100-1A1 was launched in 2010 and is one of the bestselling G-Shock models. View the GA-100 specifications in our Specs Catalog.
