Where to learn more about vintage G-Shock watches

As we mainly cover new releases at G-Central (starting in the mid-2010s), there isn’t much content here about older discontinued models from the 1980s-2000s. Fortunately, there are other sites out there with an abundance of retro G-Shock information that is useful to collectors and fans wanting to explore the past.

G-Peopleland and 50 Gs

G-Peopleland

Renowned Dutch collector Sjors, who owned 600 G-Shock watches as of 2012, created G-Peopleland in 2003, which was the first big G-Shock fan site and still one of the best G-Shock-related sites online. Consisting of original writing from a personal perspective and excellent photos, the site feels like a good friend sharing his incredible G-Shock collection with you. Sjors would go on to create another blog, 50 Gs, in 2008. There are many vintage models featured from before the 2000s, as well as many interesting limited editions. Sjors stopped updating 50 Gs in 2016, but he is still active on Facebook and Instagram with the occasional G-Shock post.

G-Shock Japan Website and Casio Watches smartphone app

G-Shock Japan Website

The G-Shock U.S. site has its own history page with some recommended videos, but the expanded timeline at the G-Shock Japan website includes more models and less familiar ones. (Update: The U.S. history page has been replaced with an English version of the Japan one.) We suggest visiting the page with Chrome and using automatic translation.

Discover G-Shock section in Casio Watches app

The Casio Watches smartphone app, available on Android and iOS, features the “Discover G-Shock” section (available in various languages) that includes an official database of past models going back to the original DW-5000C from 1983. Although we preferred the user-friendliness of the now-defunct “Product Finder” web page which is where the database originated, it’s nice that it is still available in some form.

ShockBase G-Shock Database

ShockBase G-Shock Database

A true labor of love, the uncommercialized ShockBase site aims to be the most comprehensive G-Shock database online. It is even more complete than the Casio Watches app database, as that database is limited to Japanese releases when it comes to the older models and does not include all of the collaborative models. ShockBase also includes international releases including exclusive regional releases and collaborations. Along with the model archive, there is a wealth of information in the form of articles and other databases. ShockBase also has its own history timeline that highlights new series and special editions.

G-Shock Perfect Bible Book

The G-Shock Perfect Bible is usually released for anniversary celebrations, although there hasn’t been one for the 40th Anniversary yet. It contains photos and brief descriptions of the models from the official G-Shock Japan database, as well as various features and articles. The most recent Perfect Bible was the 35th Anniversary Edition from 2018. The 30th Anniversary edition was translated into an English version as a promotional item in Singapore, but this version has become increasingly difficult to find. (There was also a promotional Chinese version.)

Casio Watches Hong Kong – Javy’s Facebook Account

Javy's Hong Kong Casio Distributor

Javy’s, the official distributor of Casio in Hong Kong, often posts retro G-Shock marketing material on its Facebook page, alongside more recent content. It does this without any notification of it being older content, although it’s usually easy to distinguish the retro watches. It’s a good account to follow to see some older models you might not have seen before. If you’re ever in Hong Kong, the G-Shock Flagship Store (G-Factory Sheung Wan) has a large display of retro models and also sells them.
