Casio W-218HD-1AV is the poor man’s G-Shock GMW-B5000

The Casio W218HD-1AV bears a passing resemblance to the popular full metal G-Shock GMW-B5000D-1, with its square like shape, octagonal bezel, silver color, and stainless steel band. Unlike the GMW, the bezel and case are made of resin and not metal, but the silver color gives it a metallic look. It is nowhere near as refined, tough, or advanced as the GMW-B5000, but you can’t really complain with a list price of $33.95. It actually looks quite nice in this YouTube video.

Another nice looking W-218 model is the dark green W218HB-3AV (list price $26.95) with a velcro band, which has a rugged military style.

The W-218 measures 44.4 x 43.2 x 10.8 millimeters and features 50-meter water resistance, resin glass, 1/100-second stopwatch, daily alarm, hourly time signal, 12/24-hour format, auto calendar, and LED backlight. Battery life is rated for approximately 7 years.

Both watches are currently available from Amazon.com. The shipping for the W218HD-1AV appears to be delayed there (“within 1 to 2 months”), and it is also available at Casio.com (note that the specifications there are wrong and for the DW-5600). The W-218HD-1AV is also available in Asia, where is it designated as a youth model.
