G-Shock GX-56TU-1A5 (last GX-56 with positive LCD display) is discontinued

G-Shock Two-Tone Utility Series: GX-56TU-1A5 and DW-6900TU-1A5

As reported at the end of 2024 by Japanese fan site Great G-Shock World, production of the G-Shock GX-56TU-1A5 (pictured above right) has been discontinued. The GX56TU-1A5 ($150) is now sold out in the U.S. at casio.com/us and most other authorized dealers, and is scheduled to be removed from the U.S. catalog soon. There are still a few dealers that have it in stock, such as Watch Trendz (watchtrendz.com), who is also selling it on Amazon (link below).

The extra-large and solar-powered GX-56TU-1A5 is notable for its military-like black and tan color combination and for having been the only remaining GX-56 model with a non-inverted (or “positive”) LCD display, which is often preferred for practical use when legibility is a priority. The GX-56 also has large mud-resistant buttons.

The best-selling blackout style GX56BB-1 remains active in the U.S., but it has the older module with the EL backlight and not the LED backlight of the GX-56TU-1A5. The “Multi Fluorescent” GX56MF-1 with LED backlight is also active and available at some dealers for the time being. The less power-efficient EL backlight may not be as much of an issue on a solar-powered watch like the GX-56, but EL backlights are known to degrade over long periods and lose their level of brightness.

The other full digital model from the Two-Tone Utility Series, DW6900TU-1A5 ($110, pictured top middle), remains active.
