The pricey G-Shock MRG-B5000 looks worth it in these videos

Like most G-Shock models, the MRG-B5000B-1 and MRG-B5000D-1 should be seen in person to fully appreciate them. Videos can also provide a better idea of what a watch will look like in person. This video from Kakakumag.com is the first to feature candid shots of the MRG-B5000 series on display and on the wrist. The video shows off the polished surfaces of the watches better than the catalog images. (It is recommended to watch it in HD in full screen mode.)

The MRG-B5000B-1, with its black DLC coating, has a glossy finish on the top surfaces of the watch. The gold MR-G and Shock Resist logos really stand out on the face, and the gold buttons, screws, and case back add a luxurious touch. The MR-G and Shock Resist logos also appear to be embossed on both models, which gives them a multidimensional appearance.

Though less expensive since it lacks the DLC coating and gold ion plated parts, I personally prefer the MRG-B5000D-1. The silver color gives it a more metallic look (which is why I purchased the GMW-B5000D-1), and the mirror polished finish of the top bezel surface provides a striking contrast with the hairline finish of the rest of the bezel frame and the band. Cobarion, which the top bezel is made of, is described as having a gleam similar to platinum, and that is more apparent in the video.

The MRG-B5000 watches certainly look more refined than the GMW-B5000 series, but whether they are $3,000 nicer is up to the individual. Like most people, these watches are not in my budget, but I can still appreciate them. I won’t attempt to explain why luxury products exist and why people shouldn’t resent them, but I see these watches as more than just a status symbol. They are a celebration of G-Shock’s existence, history, and commitment to quality.

The G-Shock MRG-B5000 series was announced for a March 2022 launch in Japan and Asia and is expected to be released worldwide later.

Update: Another video of the MRG-B5000B-1 in a Japanese store was just posted. The polished finish of the watch is even more pronounced in this video, and the closeups show the hairline finish of the side surfaces. The watch looks even better in this video which has left me less certain that I prefer the silver GMW-B5000D-1.

Incredible watches. Can’t wait to see more content on these, although I don’t think I’ll ever purchase one myself, unfortunately. Having no module upgrade from the regular GMW-B5000 series is a singular but large drawback for me, as I feel that for this price tag, there should be more than just an external difference between the MRG Squares and GMW-B5000 Squares, regardless of how fantastic it may be.

I agree. Would have loved at least one unique function or capability. This is essentially a cosmetic reskinning and a bit of a mixed bag at that. The materials and finishing are clearly a step up but the complicated corner retainers…unclear.
