Why the G-Shock DW6640RE-1 may sell out quickly and where to buy it

G-Shock DW-6640RE-1 Wrist Shot

Barring any major surprises in the second half of 2023, it looks like the G-Shock DW-6640RE-1 from the Remaster Black Series may take the title of “Most Coveted G-Shock 40th Anniversary Limited Edition.” In Japan, pre-orders for the DW-6640RE-1JF have been selling out at major retailers. This doesn’t mean it’s going to sell out in all countries, but we believe the DW6640RE-1 will be just as popular in America, if not more so.

Why is the DW-6600 revival so popular?

Unlike some of the other G-Shock revivals we’ve seen over the years, a lot of fans have been clamoring for a DW-6600 reissue. The original DW-6600 was very popular during its time in the mid-1990s and 2000s, as it was the first G-Shock watch with the EL backlight. Previous G-Shock models had a light, but it did not illuminate the entire background of the display like the EL backlight. The new DW-6600 has a Super Illuminator LED light that powers the backlight, which provides better battery life. The front light button also made it a more practical option for people who used the watch in the dark frequently. The DW-6600 had strong military connections and was associated with Navy SEALs.

The fact that the DW-6640RE-1 has a basic black color scheme with a non-inverted LCD display also makes it a desirable choice, as it is easier to see than the inverted displays typically found on basic black models. The durable stainless steel Anniversary band keeper is also a nice bonus.

The DW-6640RE-1 is a more affordable limited edition model. It is a basic model made of resin parts, so the cost isn’t as high as something like the DW-5040PG-1. This is a watch that most people can afford, and if you are trying to save money and can buy only one 40th Anniversary model, the DW-6640RE-1 is the obvious choice, as it is the most unique of the Anniversary models under $200. In the U.S., the DW6640RE-1 price is expected to be around $150.

The uncertainty about the future of the series also contributes to FOMO. We don’t know if more DW-6600 models are coming after this. It’s large LCD display doesn’t make it very suitable for the very colorful types of models we’ve seen with something like the DW-5900. While there will probably be more, the limited DW-6640RE-1 will always be the first in the revival and may end up being one of the better colorways. And if there are more, it’s not certain how long the revival will run for.

I love this classic form factor. The GW/GB/DW/-6900 is one of my all-time favorites and I’m very much looking forward to picking up two of their cousin: one to wear and one for the watch box.

It’s also refreshing to see *this* kind of special release. It shows that you don’t have to fancy up the materials and tack on cosmetic complications to get G-Shock fans excited. It’s classic, it’s pure, and it’s affordable. I hope they produce this gem by the bucket loads.

I grabbed one from Japan, as I didn’t want to wait for the US release, which seems to be taking forever.
