Casio officially announced the G-Shock Remaster Black Series, a limited edition 40th Anniversary collection coming in May. This is the anniversary series many older and longtime fans have been waiting for. The series is based on the “Four Classics of G-Shock” (DW-5600, DW-6900, GA-110, GA-2100), although here the newly revived DW-6600 (as the DW-6640RE-1) takes the place of the DW-6900, and the classic “square” is represented by the DWE-5657RE-1 which also includes a round DW-5700-style bezel. The other two models are the analog-digital GA-114RE-1A and the octagonal GA-2140RE-1A.
The series features the names of 49 significant G-Shock series and their years of introduction hot-stamped and debossed on the band, starting with the first G-Shock (DW-5000) and ending with the MRG-B5000 (along with “40TH ANNIV.” for 2023). The full list, along with brief descriptions of each entry, is available at casio.com. Each watch also has a commemorative stainless steel band keeper with a gold ion plating and a 40th Anniversary case back designed by Eric Haze. A red anniversary logo appears on the LED backlight of the DW-6640RE-1 and DWE-5657RE-1. Each watch has a side button engraved with a star, except for the GA-114RE-1A which has a star printed on the glass at the 40-minute position. The bezel and band of each watch are made from renewable bio-based resins.
The Remaster Black series will be released worldwide starting in May 2023. We expect the DW-6640RE-1 to be very high in demand and one of the faster selling 40th Anniversary models. In Japan, the series will be released on May 13 with the following tax-included prices: DW-6640RE-1JR, 18,700 yen. DWE-5657RE-1JR, 22,000 yen. GA-114RE-1AJR, 23,100 yen. GA-2140RE-1AJR, 21,450 yen.
Updates: G-Shock U.S. is expected to release the DW6640RE-1 ($150), DWE5657RE-1 ($180), and GA2140RE-1A ($150) sometime in June 2023. The GA-114RE-1A will not be released in the U.S. Reeds Jewelers released the series in the U.S. on June 6, 2023 (links below).

G-Shock DW-6600 Revival and Comparison to DW-6900
The DW-6600 made its debut in 1994 and shares its case and bezel design with the DW-6900 which came a year later. Although it was a popular model during its time and was a preferred watch for military use, it was discontinued in 2010. The DW-6600 was the first G-Shock watch equipped with the EL backlight that illuminates the entire LCD display. (The EL backlight would be added to the DW-5600 in 1996.) The updated DW-6640RE-1 has an LED backlight, which is more power-efficient and less prone to losing much brightness over the life of the watch. The DW-6640RE-1 has an approximate battery life of 5 years. (Upcoming DW-5600 and DW-6900 have also switched to the LED backlight with the same battery life result.)
The new DW-6600 has the same functions as the current DW-6900, except that previous DW-6900 models have the EL backlight. The 24-hour countdown timer is an improvement over the original DW-6600 which had a timer that was limited to 60 minutes. The new DW-6600 does not have the target time notification or auto-start features for the stopwatch that the old model had. The current time is displayed in stopwatch and timer modes. Functions include a 1/100-second stopwatch (1/100-second for first 60 minutes, 1-second after 60 minutes, 23:59’59 max, with elapsed time, split time, 1st-2nd place times), countdown timer (settable in seconds with a setting range of 1 second to 24 hours, with auto-repeat), multi-function alarm, hourly time signal, flash alert, LED backlight with afterglow, full auto calendar, and 12/24-hour format.
